Have you ever contemplated trying something new or stepping up to a challenge, only to later let the thought quietly pass you by? Oh, I didn’t catch a resounding “NO” from you.
What about that dream job opening that suddenly appeared but you decided not to pursue because you were afraid of being disappointed if you were hired? Or that salsa class you’ve been thinking about taking but haven’t yet because you’re afraid you won’t be able to keep up? You want to get in shape, but you haven’t used the gym membership you’ve had for months because you just haven’t felt like going.
All of these things are warning signs that you are trapped in your comfort zone.
When you’re in your comfort zone, you’re mentally at ease and in charge of your surroundings because of the familiarity of the situation. I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you, but your apparent contentment with the status quo is blocking your growth.
Because the unfamiliar is often viewed as harmful, our brain is wired to keep us safely within its familiar confines. This “comfort zone” is nothing more than a projection of our subconscious mind.
But what we don’t realize is that what we don’t know is what we have to discover in order to grow, and that we have to be outside of our comfort zone in order to thrive.
Yes, at first everything may seem so frightening that you will feel insecure and possibly be deceived into backing down and going back to your safe zone. First, you need to tell that part of yourself that is trying to hold you back to f… off and keep climbing that steep road we’ve just started.
The overwhelming feelings of satisfaction and gratitude will take over after you get through the initial hurdle. You’re about to go on a journey that will help you realize your full potential and mature into your ideal self.
You might be wondering, “Okay, where do I even begin?” right now.
There are easier ways to challenge yourself than walking on hot coals or scaling a mountain in bare feet. Take baby steps: enroll in a salsa lesson, start going to the gym once a week, read two chapters from that book you bought six months ago, and so on.
Take the initial step, leave your comfort zone today to be a better self tomorrow!
